7th Grade Art - 12 Colors + Black Abstract Self Portrait

In 7th Grade we have been working on learning color mixing, and abstract art. Students are given only the primary colors, and then they are mixing their secondary, tertiary, and their own black.
The students are to use the whole sheet of a 15 in. x 19 in. piece of paper, and create an abstract image.

At the end of this project students will be able to:
  1. Define Analogous colors (colors next to each other on the color wheel)
  2. Define Primary colors
  3. Know how to mix secondary colors
  4. Know how to mix tertiary colors
  5. Define complimentary (colors opposite of each other on the color wheel).
  6. Know how to mix black using complimentary colors.
  • Students must use the whole sheet of paper
  • The self portrait must be abstract
  • The student will demonstrate mixing all 9 colors + black by using shapes
  • Students are not allow to create blends of colors unless all of the 12 colors + black have been established
  • Tints, tones, or shades may be used only after the 9 colors have been established
  • The project must be neat and have a polished quality
