Charcoal Sketches

Today we used charcoal to create two types of sketches in class. In the first sketch students were to draw each object utilizing the whole sheet of paper.

Students were encourages to use the Elements of Design in deciding how the drawing would be composed.

Students thought that in general that the following elements were used in their drawings:
  • Shape
  • Form
  • Value
  • Texture

The second sketch was composed using a view finder. A piece of matte board with a small window cut into it was used to crop the original still life.

Students were encouraged to use the entire sheet of paper and to display three points of interest. These points of interest might be shadows or objects, that looked interesting when looking at the still life through the view finder.
